OKAY, now Joan is just showing off! (Best pictures below) Mar 26: It's here - in Fleetwood; at the cabin when the snow melts. Well, it melted on the driveway so it is also at the cabin. This is better than a mobile. Makes me think of Noah at the circus under the big top. I love it. Too bad it has been so many years since I was that little boy I once was.
Mar 27: Finally got a pic of the whole quilt. Apr 03: Loaded & ready to quilt. Apr 04: Quilted. I rarely do custom but this one just called out for it. Custom is much more manageable on a smaller quilt like this one. Feb 26: Quilt arrived.
Feb 27: First photos. Started working on ideas for custom quilting this one. Mar 04-05: Continued with more ideas using several of Donna Kleinke's patterns to create a scalloped edge. Mar 11: Back with more ideas. Mar 12: Bought the Garden Bunnies Set. Still fine tuning the corners. Mar 15: Offered several layouts. Mar 16: Joan made her choice. Mar 25: Rails cleaned, bobbins wound, thread changed, pressed, loaded, basted, quilting. The top borders are done. Try though I may, I can only show you the sashing ... until I show you the back. Tomorrow I will continue with the center panto and then the lower borders. I will remove the quilt, turn it 90 degrees and then reload it to do the side borders. Mar 26: Quilted.
Feb 21: Quilt by Joan Taylor arrived. Feb 23: Will use 60 wt. Bottom Line #623 Silver thread with Chantilly Lace. Pressed, threads trimmed & ready to load. Feb 24: Decided to stop and do a quilt rendition & overlay. Will be doing 10" rows. Feb 26: Loaded & ready to quilt. Binding fabric just came in from Joan. Quilting. Feb 27: QuIlted. Mar 03: Attached binding & clipped for hand work.. Mar 08: Binding is finished Mar 10: Shipped A note of thanks from JoanMar 09: Linda: Thank you so much for doing this for us. I can’t tell you how much this quilt means to us given that the white ribbons represent Lung Cancer and more specifically because they were put in this quilt in memory of my brother, and my niece Suzanne’s father Charles, who passed away. The quilt will be raffled off between now and mid-June with the proceeds going to the American Cancer society. I want you to know that your support of this project, and us personally, means more than our words could possibly express. Thank you so much! Joan I like to send remnants to Joan just to see what she will come up with. This time she added some of hers. You can tell who the real piecer is!! I have been known to send her whole projects which is how J&L Quilters came to be. We are enjoying a revival these days. Feb 16: I just found a picture Joan sent me 2 years ago taken Dec 2007--that was 2 years before we met.--of her butterflies!
Feb 18: Finally getting around to taking some pictures of the whole quilt. Apr 01: This has been one of those days when quilt after quilt has something holding it back so I scanned for patterns for this one. Apr 02: Finalized pattern choice & best shade of Magnifico to simulate a metallic look. Quilted. Apr 03: I tried last night and several times today but find this quilt very hard to photograph as it really looks. I guess only Joan & I will really know how beautiful it is. Joan will add lights to complete this project. Feb 18: Finally posting a picture.
Feb 23: IWe are using a loose Cloud UpDown pattern stitched with So Fine! #413 Scarlett and Bottom Line #627 Bright red bobbins. There should not be any show-though with the threads so close in color. We'll see. Pressed & ready to load. Loaded. Quilted. Quilting time 12 minutes. It took far more time press the red backing. Wow. Stunning. Looks so much better in person than my little camera is doing these days. Feb 18: Working on a quilting pattern & preparing to load.
Feb 19: Panto is one I created from two of Ellen Munnich's Serif Capital Letters. Using letters were Joan's idea. Programmed so now ready to press & load. Oops. Still need thread color. Tan? Will post options soon. Feb 20: Quilted one row but had a gap in my pattern so I took it out & fixed the pattern. Feb 21: Quilting. Quilted. Feb 22: Final pictures. Shipped. Nov 27: The quilt arrived at my door today in spite of bitter cold weather & a white driveway. I have decided to do this one out of sequence so I can ship both to Joan on Friday. I'll load it tonight & quilt it tomorrow & still have time to enjoy Thanksgiving. There is no friend for whom I am more thankful than Joan. I keep losing count but I think this is quilt/project #31 from Joan to the cabin.
Nov 28: Loaded & quilting using Bottom Line Silver thread and 6" rows. After completing the first pair of rows (one roll of the quilt), I meant to take a picture. I checked the stitches on the back & then unrolled for the photo shoot. Rolled the quilt, clamped the sides, pin basted, realized I forgot again to take the photo. Shoot! Shut down the system knowing I was too tired to continue. Took a shot of the rolled up quilt instead. Oh, and I'll be binding this one. Nov 29: More photos. Squared. Started on the binding. And the binding is attached, clamped & ready for the needle... in the morning. GO! West Virginia! Just fhought I'd show some school spirit. Nov 15: Quilt arrived.
Nov 17: Did my own pattern of the WVU logo. Nov 18: Thread selection time. Geez! How many shades of yellow do I have? Nov 26: Setup. Nov 27: Quilting and quilted. Want a better bed photo...perhaps tomorrow. Nov 28: Final pictures. Oct 21: Pattern selected.
Oct 28: Programming, prepping, loading. Oct 29: Trimming threads as I press the top. Re-visited the density & ended up exactly where I started. Such an open pattern is not as dense as the "density factor" indicates. The snow flakes are one thing but the fat little snowman belly is another. Loaded, basted & ready to quilt. Oct 30: Quilting. Oops! Machine problems when bobbin ran out & thread got caught inside the machine creating a horrific jam. I've cleared the jam but still having what I hope is a minor problem. Will call APQS in the morning for help. Oct 31: Heard from APQS but it was at 5 PM. We sorted out in just a few minutes that the drive belt needs replacing. It was worn just a tad too much from the jam. A new one is on the way from Iowa. Nov 04: The belt is here & the machine is fixed. Back in business. Nov 05: Let's quilt! Quilted. Nov 06: Binding is attached. Nov 08: Bound Nov 09: Shipped to Pete Dec 31: I'll be quilting this with meandering loops and invisible thread on top. The backing will be solid red with red thread. Will try to get a better picture in the morning. Jan 04: Pillow pieced & quilted Jan 05: Loaded Jan 06: Quilting Jan 07-08: Bound. This quilt & pillow, I suspect, is going to Joan's sister who loves Grinch. I hear there will be more Grinch quilts in the future. Back on Dec 19th, 2011, just before Christmas, I first heard from Becca regarding a large family project. Joan & I have now contracted to do a set of three t-shirt memory quilts for her mother, Margaret, and the daughters, Becca & Allison. The goal is for each one to have a quilt that is sized to fit at least a double bed. Joan will design and piece the quilt tops & I will longarm and bind them. Work will begin in mid-January (2012). Apr 01: Joan has now received the t-shirts for Allison's memory quilt.
Aug 12: Per Joan: "I hope to finish step 3 of T-shirt 3 today (attach bonding to all 35 pieces -- about 1/3 done so far)." She did it! Next weekend she will buy fabric for the sashing and backing. Oct 4: Joan is getting closer to finishing this. Should be here within a week or two. Nov 08: The quilt is here. Nov 28: Allison has selected her IQ Pattern-Flirtatious. Jan 07: Next in the queue. Jan 08: Prepared and loaded the backing. Cut the batting. Jan 09-11: Worked on the top as I had time. Quilt is now loaded. Jan 13: Quilting. And quilted. Jan 14: Cut the binding Jan 15: Pieced and attached the binding Jan 18: Binding finished Jul 01, 2012: Received Joan's surprise for Becca.
July 01: Stabilized, pieced & quilted. July 02: Made the pillow cover & stuffed the pillow inside July 05: Closed up the seam by hand. Joan tells me that when she saw my Walden Pond fabrics way back when, she bought some from that line. Brilliantly conceived and executed. PS: She suggested how to piece mine too. Doesn't this just look awesome with those log walls? Not coveting, just admiring and basking in it while it is here. Like looking out a window...
Apr 08: Loaded. I must say that at the beginning of this long and peaceful weekend, I was out of sorts and quite tired. As I prepared and loaded this quilt, well let me say it this way: I don’t remember a quilt ever being as soothing as this one. There is something very special about it, perhaps all the care and love you put into it and every quilt you make. It shows and they bless… Apr 09: Basting. A word about longarming: When I baste the batting to the backing I am not only securing the two but am also sewing a very straight line. I use this line to line-up the top when basting it to the other two. On this quilt, the feature fabric used for the backing is exactly the size of the quilt top which is NOT a problem. A 3" strip of scrap fabric has been sewn to the top and the bottom of the backing so it can be loaded. This will be cut away when the quilt is squared. Since this backing and top are such a tight fit & since it is hard to sew a straight line with a seam (scrap strip & backing) underneath the quilt, I am improvising. I have pinned along the seam on the back of the quilt & am aligning the top to the other side (top) of those pins. This (my intent anyway) ensures the top comes right to the edge of the backing. Hopefully when I get to the other end, that will fit perfectly too. If not, Joan will lose a tad of her quilt when squaring. Of course, that is what squaring is all about, no? We shall see. Quilting. I love your pattern choice for this, Joan. So elegant! Apr 10: Quilted. Apr 11: Final pictures. Back on Dec 19th, just before Christmas, I first heard from Becca regarding a large family project. Joan & I have now contracted to do a set of three t-shirt memory quilts for her mother, Margaret, and the daughters, Becca & Allison. Feb 12: This weekend, Becca was in Greensboro with her mom. Margaret. They got all the shirts selected and organized for Becca's quilt.Feb 20: Margaret will mail Becca's shirts to Joan this week.Feb 23: Joan received Becca's shirts the same day I received Margaret's quilt.
May 01: Joan will ship today - oops! I must go out of town. May 04: Joan will ship today. LOL May 09: The quilt top is here. Joan, this is so pretty & so beautifully pieced. Another masterpiece. My hat is off to you for this is NOT an easy quilt top to make. I invite you to share just what all is involved in making a memory quilt from well worn t-shirts. I need to prepare the backing & get this loaded while Becca is selecting her IQ pattern. I have been warned to be super careful when/if I must iron any of this so I am going to try to avoid it. May 10: Decided to hold this until June and continue my May break from longarming. May 18: Becca made her final choice of Modern Squares for her IQ pattern. June 04: Binding is ready. June 05: Backing is ready. June 11: Loading. June 12: Quilting. June 13: Still quilting... June 14: Still quilting...so many memories, so many years, so much work -- worth it to take my time on this. QUILTED! Now on to the binding. June 22: Squared the quilt to prepare it for binding. The binding is attached. Hand work is all that is left to do. July 05: Hand binding & thus the quilt is finished. Will ship tomorrow. This applique quilt with custom quilting is so beautiful. I will be adding the binding for Joan. So far my hands allow me to do this while her's do not. Jan 14: Prepared and attached binding. Hand stitched one side. 1/4 done. Jan 15: Continuing with the hand binding. 1/2 done. Jan 16: Finished the binding. _ "Purple tulip quilt blocks were applique blocks started (and nearly completed) by my Aunt, Aletha Herzog Mays -- the oldest of my mother's sisters. A couple of years ago when my aunt was being moved into a nursing home, I was the lucky recipient of what she had started. I finished what little applique was not complete. Purples happen to be both my Aunt's and my favorite so I had the purple paisley fabric that worked perfectly for assembling the quilt top. Bettie Pharr, an excellent quilter and multitalented friend of mine in West Virginia beautifully custom quilted this for me. Linda Lovett very generously has put the hand turned binding on for me. So many hands have brought this all together and oh so beautifully. It will have a permanent home on the brass bed in my guest room." The goal is for each one to have a quilt that is sized to fit at least a double bed. Joan will design and piece the quilt tops & I will longarm and bind them. Work will begin in mid-January. As usual, I will track progress here! This is quite exciting for all involved. The referral for this work came through my daughter, Joanne, of Ye Old Forest Quilters.
